Faced with the annual task of helping to move five million tonnes
of scrap, slag and other materials at British Steel's Scunthorpe
site, Appleby Slag Reduction (ASR) has added 10 new 40t capacity
Aveling Barford dump trucks to its fleet.
The addition increases ASR's fleet of 40t capacity trucks on the
South Humberside site to more than 20 units.
To date Aveling Barford remains the only truck manufacturer to be
featured in ASR's plant fleet.
Mick Glover, ASR's general manager said: 'We have standardised on
the best equipment in each of our plant sectors, Aveling Barford
trucks, Caterpillar loading shovels and Akerman excavators.'
The company works its 110 items of mobile plant on 14 different
sites around the Scunthorpe complex. One of the most arduous tasks,
according to ASR, involves the digging and transportation of blast
furnace slag.
Once the molten slag has been poured from the four blast furnaces
and left to cool in a pit for up to eight hours, it is then dug out
by 7.5m3 capacity Caterpillar 988F wheel loaders and loaded into
the RD40s.
To meet the job's demands - which at times involves shifting red
hot material - all 10 of the Aveling Barford dump trucks have been
specially adapted.
Specification changes include: heat resistant shields and shrouds
around vulnerable cables, brakes and hydraulic pipes and additional
strips inside the truck body to create voids for improved heat
dissipation. ASR claims that at times the heat emitted from the
slag is so intense, that it causes the trucks to glow.
More than 4,000t of iron slag is dug and transported some 6km to
the tip for cooling and processing every day. With the addition of
granulated and steelplant slag the volume of material increases to
nearly 50,000t a week.
All 10 RD40s are powered by six cylinder Cummins NTA855C-450
turbocharged diesel engines and can reach a maximum speed of more
than 49.5 km/h, it is claimed. Body plates, which are up to 25mm
thick, and the underfloor ribs are both manufactured from high
yield point steel.
