Rig bonanza to go abroad
Contractors fear that a multi million pound offshore
decommissioning work bonanza, following Shell's decision not to
dump its Brent Spar storage installation at sea, may be lost to
overseas yards.
There are more than 200 offshore structures in place in the North
Sea and around the British coast. Shell's about-turn on the
disposal of Brent Spar could lead to a flood of dismantling
contracts for work-starved fabrication yards. But UK contractors
are concerned that there will be a lack of suitable sites for the
work around the domestic coastline. And the work may well go to the
deep water facilities of Norway and other Continental
countries.
One contractor said: 'We are still operating very much in the dark
on this work. There seems no reason why the initial fabrication
process could not simply be reversed. But the contractors remain
unclear about the policy.'
