Birse awarded œ9m twin-lift bridges build

Birse Construction has been awarded a œ9 million contract by Humberside County Council to build twin lifting bridges to complete the œ30 million Ennerdale Link Road in Hull.

The bridges replace the ill-fated attempt to provide a road tunnel under the River Hull. Mowlem had to stop work on the tunnel in 1992 after flooding occurred because the tunnel floor was closer to the bottom of a boulder clay layer than had been thought. The council eventually abandoned the tunnel project in August 1993.

The project is part of a road link scheme costing œ13.5 million, but the tunnel fiasco has driven the total cost up to around œ30 million. The council issued a writ in the High Court in March this year claiming damages of at least œ10 million against consultant Acer and geotechnical specialist Soil Mechanics.

Birse's contract comprises the construction of 640m of dual carriageway and one roundabout, all on an embankment.

It will construct two counterweighted bascule bridges crossing the River Hull and widen an existing bridge.
