Halcrow makes desert bloom
Halcrow announced the breakthrough of the second tunnel of the
œ60 million El Salaam Syphon project in Egypt, on the west
bank of the Suez Canal.
The syphon will eventually comprise four 5.74m internal diameter,
primary segmentally lined tunnels, each 770m long.
It will convey water from the Nile, together with agricultural
drainage water, under the Suez Canal to North Sinai. The aim is to
develop 162,000ha of land for agricultural and industrial
use.
The syphon is being built for Egypt's Ministry of Works and Water
Resources by CMC/ Besix contracting joint venture.
Halcrow, working with local partner Misr Consulting, is responsible
for design and supervision.
