Sharp fall in orders
Orders for new construction in fell sharply in May by more than 4%
to their lowest levels since September 1995, according to figures
published by the Department of the Environment on Tuesday.
The DoE attributed the fall to a shortfall in infrastructure
orders, mainly road schemes, and a lower volume private housing
orders.
In the three months between March and May, the total volume of new
orders received by contractors was 7% lower than in the previous
three, but 3% higher compared to the same quarter in 1995.
The value of new orders won in May are valued at œ1.853
billion by the DoE.
