The Iveco Daily is Europe's biggest-selling van range at 3.5t GVW.
Now it is set to take an even larger share of the market, thanks to
a package of innovations launched in the UK last week.
Models now come in four ranges: Leader, Classic, Professional and
Family. Leader is an entry level 3.5tGVW van at lowest price;
Classic is full-range, including chassis cabs/cowls; Professional
is aimed at urban parcel delivery outfits; Family is a 15-seat bus.
Weight ranges cover from 3.5t up 5.9tGVW. There are versions with
single rear wheels and twins depending on operators' needs. Four
roof heights and two wheelbases complete the picture.
Uprated engines head the list of improvements with the well-proven
SOFIM units now putting out 61kW (2.5 litre indirect injection,
normally aspirated), 76kW (2.8 litre direct injection,
turbocharged) and 90kW (2.8 litre direct injection,
turbocharged/intercooled).
All units meet the so-called Euro 2 regulations without resorting
to electronic injection control technology. Although the 60kW unit
switches to the Bosch VE injection pump running at higher
pressure.
All three power units are quieter as a result of improved engine
bay encapsulation, flywheel vibration dampers, improved
electromagnetic cooling fan, larger diameter main bearings,
oil-cooled piston galleries and other changes too numerous to list.
But they work: drive by noise is reduced by 3 decibels from 81 to
78, an audible difference.
Gear ratios feature a shortened first for easy pull-away but higher
ratio rear axles for quieter cruising. The pull type clutch is
modified to cope with the extra engine power and torque.
Disc brakes all-round, on all variants up to 5tGVW, is the big news
on the stopping front and a new servo is claimed to give better
"feel" and reduced effort. Iveco says pedal effort is down by
18%.
Interiors are also upgraded, the new seat trim being "ten times
harder wearing", according to Iveco. Fascia is softer, and sound
levels are much lower at just 70dB(A) at 80kph. A gear lever
shorter by 25mm makes it easier to walk across the cab, says
Iveco.
The driver's seat is adjustable up/down, forward/back, and has a
rake adjuster, superfluous in the versions with bulkheads, unless
you are only 5 feet tall. At 4-6tGVW the Daily is clear UK market
leader with 50% plus of the unit totals. But totals here are only
at the 3,000 mark, and not expected to grow by much.
