RIBA decides to recognise union
The Royal Institute of British Architects council has agreed to
re-recognise the MSF union.
The MSF, which claims to represent 85% of RIBA staff, was
de-recognised two years ago after the appointment of Dr Alexander
Reid as director-general.
The union says de-recognition led to a strife-torn period of
restructuring and job losses at the institute. A union campaign
subsequently won the backing of Labour employment spokesman Michael
Meacher.
MSF general secretary Roger Lyons said: "Professional staff have
reasserted their right to be true stakeholders with the backing of
an effective and influential union."
n The MSF is claiming a 5% pay increase for heating and ventilating
operatives. The union also wants overtime rates for hours worked in
excess of the basic 38-hour week.
