Rink failure is rectified

Problems of two part sealant failure at the Broadgate open air ice rink in central London have been solved by BRC Square Grips Illmod 600 joint sealant, the company claims.

The joints, in a pedestrian area surrounding the rink had previously been sealed with polysulphide sealants. Compression in summer caused the sealant to dome, making it vulnerable to cleaning and foot traffic. Winter brought with it pavement shrinkage which resulted in debonding of the sealant.

Following a series of failures in less than 12 months, Broadgate Estates decided to employ Illmod 600, a precompressed polyurethane foam sealant tape manufactured by Illbruck. This followed one year of simulated testing which proved Illmod to be completely resistant to scrubber-drier machines and power hosing.

Movement joints running through the middle of the walkway area and the control joints on the granite paved walkway have now been resealed. Old grout joints have been cut out and replaced with 3,500m of Illmod 600. According to BRC, work is due for completion by mid August.
