Switch to PFI plans for lab buildings
Plans to redevelop the National Physical Laboratory site at
Teddington, Middlesex, have been switched to a PFI route by the
Government.
Mace was appointed project manager to help the NPL undertake a
œ20 million rationalisation plan in May 1992. Tenders for
phase 1 of a three-year rolling programme were due to go out in
1993, but the scheme was put on hold until now.
The NPL, an agency of the Department of Trade and Industry,
currently consists of some 54 buildings totalling 36,000m2 of
space. The buildings vary in age and quality - some may require
little work, while others may need replacing entirely.
The scope of the PFI contract will cover property and facilities
management for the NPL. It will include planning, administration
and implementation of building replacement and refurbishment, as
well as maintenance and servicing of all buildings over a 25 year
period.
