Agreement sparks new boost for Docklands area
London's Dockland area has received a new boost with the
announcement of a new office complex in the Royal Docks and a
housing development on the Isle of Dogs.
The London Docklands Development Corporation has agreed terms with
Norton Healthcare, a subsidiary of the drugs company IVAX
Corporation, for the sale of 9.5ha of land on the north side of the
Albert Basin.
The agreement, which is still subject to approval by the Government
Office for London, is for the construction of a 14,720m2 facility.
The new building will house Norton Healthcare's European
headquarters, laboratories, pharmaceutical packaging facilities and
a major new customer service centre.
The company will relocate 500 staff from Harlow, Essex. A second
phase of development proposes a further 13,800m2 of space, which
will be used for similar uses as the first phase. Norton Healthcare
hopes to start on site this autumn for completion in late 1997.
On the Isle of Dogs, housebuilder Redrow Homes is to build 160 one
and two-bedroom apartments off Manchester Road. The site is the
third Docklands venture for Redrow, and is expected to have a
development value of around œ20 million.
