Engineers move against fraud

The International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) is to launch a policy statement on corruption as part of an international campaign against fraud.

The FIDIC statement recommends that opportunities for corruption should be minimised by using open methods of procurement with projects decided on using criteria such as quality, cost, credit terms and timing.

Current FIDIC president William Lewis said that corruption is a moral as well as an economic issue.

He said: "Corrupt procurement of engineering contracts has to be dealt with head on, and not just talked about behind closed doors."
