The Construction Industry Board is expected to recommend today a
wide range of initiatives to completely overhaul training in the
construction industry at craft and operative level.
The initiatives stem from the findings of Working Group 6, which
was set up by the CIB to review the state of training in the wake
of the Latham Report. Working Group 6's report Training the Team is
also out today.
Working Group 6 chairman Hugh Try, who is also chairman of the
Construction Industry Training Board, commented: "Working Group 6
was a good group to look at existing training arrangements, but it
did not have the resources to think about the fundamental issues.
"So I very much welcome the CIB initiative, it's very important. I
can't think of a study into training with scope as broad as this
happening for many years."
The CIB has put forward a range of recommendations for improvement
in the provision of training and industry practice. The CIB also
examines in particular how training can help meet the goals of
increased productivity, quality and a 30 per cent reduction in real
construction costs.
