Mowlem prosecuted
The Health and Safety Executive is prosecuting John Mowlem
Construction following an investigation into an incident on 30
October 1995. It is alleged that, when the company was undertaking
repairs to the M6 motorway at Spaghetti Junction in Birmingham,
debris was dropped onto people using the Gravelly Hill Viaduct
below.
Caradon sell-off
Caradon, the building materials group, is reported to be close to
selling-off around œ200 million worth of non-core businesses.
The businesses, mostly on the distribution and aviation side,
became part of the group when Pillar was bought three years ago. A
management buy-in, funded by venture capitalists, is thought to be
the most likely option.
soil treatment report
A new report into full scale treatment technologies for the
remediation of contaminated soil has been published by EPP
Publications in Richmond. It was prepared for the UK Royal
Commission on Environmental Pollution and reviews current
technologies employed in the UK, Europe and North America.
AFRICAN acquisition
WSP Consulting Engineers has acquired a minority interest in Watson
Edwards, a South African consulting engineer. The two companies
have also formed a 50/50 joint venture company - WSP Watson Edwards
- to pursue work in Africa and in the world market.
ealing outrage
Ealing Council in West London has expressed outrage following the
news that land next to the Grand Union Canal and part of the Brent
River Park, has been earmarked as a possible replacement site for
the Perry Oaks Sewage Works, which will have to be moved if the
fifth terminal at Heathrow Airport goes ahead. The council has
pledged to fight any attempt to relocate the plant to its
site.
The DTI is to launch a new standard designed to improve bill
payment times in business on 10 September. BS7890, which was
developed by the BSI working with industry, is designed to create
better links between suppliers and customers and improve payment
practices.
Engineering consultancy Parkman is to advise South Yorkshire
Passenger Transport Executive on the Construction (Design and
Management) regulations 1994. Parkman has produced a clear site of
guidelines for the Executive. It is also advising Rolls Royce Motor
Cars on CDM.
