Sabotage alert at Tsing Ma Bridge

Saboteurs have damaged the two main bridges on Hong Kong's Lantau Link road to the new airport just a week before Lady Thatcher is due to open the new route on 27 April.

Communication or electrical cables were cut in at least 32 places in the emergency traffic tunnels which run under the main road surface on both the Tsing Ma suspension bridge and Kap Shui Mun cable-stayed bridge. The police were alerted to the problem by a contractor on Friday 18 April.

CJ understands that Hong Kong police are targeting subcontractors or disgruntled employees as the most likely suspects.

There are suspicions that the damage may have been done earlier than last week and that there may be more damage as yet undiscovered.

The cables were installed by the M&E contractor ABB, which had a direct contract with the Hong Kong Highways Department. The damage is not connected to either of the bridge construction teams.

Mott MacDonald was responsible for the design of the œ600 million, 1,377m main span Tsing Ma bridge and the concept design and specification of the œ180 million Kap Shui Mun bridge. Both carry a six-lane highway on their top deck and twin rail tracks plus two road lanes on the sheltered lower deck.

The Tsing Ma bridge was built by the Anglo-Japanese Construction joint venture of Trafalgar House, Costain and Mitsui. Main contractor for the Kap Sui Mun bridge was the Kumagai-Maeda-Yokogawa-Hitachi joint venture.
