Levels of UK private sector housebuilding activity continued to rise during the first quarter of 1997, according to NHBC statistics that show that more than 34,000 applications were made for new starts, representing a rise of eight per cent on the same period in 1996. An average of 632 new homes were sold per day in the first three months.
Davis heads for the FMB
Ian Davis will join the Federation of Master Builders as director general in August of this year. Davis, currently deputy chief executive at the NHBC, will be replacing Dennis Maiden who is retiring.
Policy hunt
The Construction Industry Council has asked the main political parties to define their policy on public sector procurement of professional services. It wants the new government to replace procurement solely by fee competition.
Top ten launch
Ten blue-chip companies have jointly launched an initiative to improve productivity in UK offices. The brainchild of SBS Business Solutions and BRE, the project has won financial backing from the DoE's Partners in Technology programme. A software package and book are being prepared to help managers enhance office performance.
