Basic pay tops œ200
The basic wage for skilled craftsmen will soon top œ200 a week
for the first time.
New rates of pay, agreed by the Building and Allied Trades Joint
Industrial Council last week, take the hourly rate for craftsmen to
œ5.13 (previously œ4.94).
Adult general operatives also receive a 3.8 per cent rise, taking
their hourly figure to œ4.39.
The BAJIC agreement comes into force on 21 July 1997 and runs
through to 14 June 1998. The 250,000 employees affected by the deal
account for a quarter of the industry's workforce.
BAJIC is an industrial agreement between the Federation of Master
Builders and the construction sector of the T&GWU trade union.
"We had amicable discussions," said a spokesman."The negotiations
were sensible."
