œ100 million Metrolink extension job won by Altram consortium
The Altram (Manchester) consortium was last week confirmed as
winner of the concession to build and operate the œ100 million
Manchester Metrolink extension to Salford Quays and Eccles.
The consortium, comprises of John Laing, Ansaldo Trasporti, the
Serco Group and 3i Group. Laing and Ansaldo will build the 6.4 km
light rail extension which includes bridges over the Bridgewater
Canal and the Manchester Ship Canal, a viaduct and an underpass.
The concession includes the operation of the existing Metrolink
system from Bury to Altrincham through Manchester city centre in
addition to the extension, for 17 years.
Work starts in July and is scheduled to finish in June 2000.
Completion will be staged, with trams running to Salford Quays by
the end of 1998 and to Eccles in 1999.
The project is being financially backed by 3i and the Bank of
America and 3i will hold a minority shareholding in Altram with
Laing and Ansaldo.
