œ150m (Mc) Alpine ski resort for Croydon
A œ150 million alpine leisure centre is to be built in
Croydon, South London.
The "Snowdome" scheme is being developed by Caterham Development
Company, Alfred McAlpine Special Projects and Craig European.
The facilities will include real snow ski slopes with room for 700
people, a toboggan run, a 4,800 seat 24 screen multiplex cinema, an
arena seating between 4,000 and 7,000 people, restaurants, hotel
conference and keep fit facilities including a leisure pool.
The scheme will be situated at a 2.5ha site by East Croydon rail
station that has lain undeveloped for 30 years. The British
Railways Board and KPMG - receivers for Rosehaugh - agreed the sale
of the site and developed plans for a 41,800m2 leisure complex last
year. While pursuing the planning application they also looked for
a developer.
The developers are now proposing a scheme of 128,800m2 on land
owned by BRB, the receivers for Rosehaugh and the Prudential
Assurance Company.
Work should start on site in January 1998 for completion in 2000.
Architect is Faulkner Brown.
