Celebrating 60 years of manufacturing Benford chose this year's
show to launch its SP2000 series of self-propelled rollers.
In a display of fireworks and smoke, to the strains of Rule
Britannia, the latest addition to the Benford stable was introduced
to the waiting public.
With operating weights of 10 and 12.6 tonnes, the SP2010 and SP2012
are designed for ease of maintenance and enhanced levels of
operator comfort.
They are offered with Cummins or Deutz engine options.
Benford also announced an order from the British Army for 40, 6
tonne dumpers won following stiff competition from other UK
manufacturers.
NOSTALGIA CORNER
Nostalgia Corner sponsored by PMJ featured a selection of venerable
ex-army plant from the collection of John Marchant.
A self-confessed vintage plant nut, his collection now numbers 70
items of kit many of which are made in Canada.
Painted in authentic olive green, the six examples of 1940s
engineering provided a welcome contrast to the latest in design and
technology filling the exhibition field. The items on show at SED
included:
lAn Aveling Barford PV8 motor roller made in 1944 and one of only
140 made.
lA rare Buckeye Wheeled Trencher, one of only two in the UK. This
model 165D was manufactured in 1943 in Ohio.
lA Galion Motor Grader model 101 again manufactured in Ohio in
1943.
lA Leyland Centaur tank/bulldozer dating from 1944.
lA Muirhill-Fordson 2.5 yd dumper, manufactured in 1945 by E
Boydell & Co
Some of these amazing machines have been restored following rescue
by Marchant from scrap yards up and down the country.
The quality of the workmanship and the popularity of the exhibit
among visitors are a tribute to his enthusiasm for these rare and
historic machines.
Selwood
Continuing its aquatic theme of the past few years, Selwood's stand
at SED '97 was focused on a display of five working pumps. These
were arranged in a semi-circle around a specially excavated pool -
filled with water dyed a lurid green to create an impressive
1,698m3/h cascade.
While Selwood representatives assured visitors to the stand that
the same water was being re-cycled continuously, some questioned
whether the display had anything to do with the way the many
Selwood-supplied toilet blocks servicing this year's SED showground
were being emptied?
Inmalo
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, parts supplier Inmalo
reported sales of its new Metalogenia MTG bucket teeth off the
stand on the first day of this year's SED show.
The MTG teeth are designed to last twice as long as conventional
teeth the company claims, and they retain their sharpness
longer.
According to managing director, John Polak, sales off the stand at
SED are not unusual, but to see such activity on day one was a turn
up for the books:
"We might normally expect to do some business on Wednesday or
Thursday," he noted, "but this year things got off to a flying
start."n
