HSE prosecutes after asbestos incident

The Health and Safety Executive is prosecuting Surrey County Council and WS Atkins following an incident at Camberley last July when it is alleged that uncontrolled stripping of asbestos-containing pipe insulation was carried out. At an earlier hearing in March, WS Atkins pleaded guilty to a breach of CDM regulations.

Brick figures up 19 per cent

Bricks dispatch figures for April were 19 per cent higher than in the same month last year, according to latest figures from the Department of the Environment. The monthly figure is also the second highest since the beginning of the recession in 1990.

Queen opens œ2 billion link

The Storebaelt fixed link - also known as the Great Belt - was officially opened last Saturday by Queen Margarete of Denmark. The œ2 billion project completes the connection between the capital Copenhagen and the mainland peninsula by a fixed road and rail link, including a 7.9km-long twin-bore railway tunnel. It was engineered by Mott MacDonald in jv with Danish firm COWIconsult.

Putley develops with eve

Gordon Putley has been appointed business development manager at Eve Group. He joins Eve from John Laing Construction. Eve has also made Andrew Kimber director of its commercial division, while the new director of operations is John Mitchell.

Parsons pockets œ320,000

The total remuneration received last year by Taylor Woodrow chairman Colin Parsons was œ320,000, well up on the 1995 figure of œ282,000. Chief executive Tony Palmer benefited from a œ55,000 pay hike, to œ298,000. The company's annual report also shows a œ25,000 donation to the Conservative Party last year.

Raglan boss sees signs of hope

The property market is improving, said Sir Wilfrid Newton, chairman of Raglan Properties this week as the group announced a profit before tax of œ11 million (œ10 million).

Hurcomb takes over in the south

Drake & Scull Engineering's new manager for the southern region is John Hurcomb. Based in Chandlers Ford, he previously worked for Haden Young.
