Raglan in œ2.7m battle after shopping centre fire
Raglan Properties plans to recoup œ2.7 million through a joint
court action, against both the architect who designed and the
contractor who built a shopping centre in New Maldon which burned
down as a result of arson in 1991.
Raglan's Alan Fosler declined to name the two parties involved, but
said: "As a result of the arson, the fire spread into adjoining
premises and the insurers took us to court. We lost the initial
case, the judge saying that the fire spread through a hole in the
wall that shouldn't have been there.
"The property was either incorrectly built or designed so we are
suing the contractor and architect together to recoup the
money."
Fosler explained that up until Raglan's financial reconstitution in
1993, the company was effectively bust, so there was no point in
anyone suing it at that time. Since then, however, its fortunes
have revived, with annual profits running to more than œ5
million a year. The case will be heard in October.
