LAMBETHCLAIMSPFIFIRST

The London Borough of Lambeth claims it is the first council to put its service contracts through the PFI process. The project, worth œ35 million per annum over 10 years, involved the largest ever single externalisation of local authority services. It involved the sale of Lambeth Contract Services, a joint venture agreement between the Council and Serviceteam to establish Team Lambeth. Its 17 contracts cover refuse collections, graffiti removal, school meals, building maintenance and welfare transport.

Scarborough case before court

A claim for damages by Scarborough Council went before the High Court this week against the engineering firm Geotechnical Engineering (Northern) which was consulted before the collapse of the Holbeck Hall Hotel in a cliff slide three years ago. The council says the company was in breach of contract on the site investigation and the advice they gave. The council is being sued in turn by the insurers who were forced to pay œ2.2 million in compensation.

œ35 million government boost

President of the Board of Trade, Margaret Beckett, has announced that 186 projects worth more than œ100 million, are to receive up to œ35.6 million of Government funding through the Sector Challenge initiative.

ruthin acquires Tarmac Masonry products

Ruthin Precast Concrete has acquired the businesses formerly trading as Tarmac Masonry Products in Ruthin, Denbighshire and the Technical Sales Office for the Environmental Engineering Products at Taunton, Somerset. Ruthin manufactures a range of retaining walls, drainage and water industry products, as well as revetment systems for embankment protection.

œ9 billion asbestos market beckons

New changes in the nature of the certification required for asbestos removal firms working in France will make it easier for UK firms to tender for a share of the estimated œ9 billion market. EC rules on fair competition have forced the French government to open up their market up to other EU countries. British firms have a distinct advantage following 25 years experience in asbestos removal. Most other European countries are a long way behind the UK in tackling the problem.

1,000 homes heading for Scotland

Scottish Homes has announced a œ36 million investment for the north and east in 1997/98 - an investment which will bring in a further œ29 million of private sector funding to improve housing in Grampian, Tayside and Fife. Around 1,000 homes for rent and sale will be provided.

œ225 million WARNER scheme on hold

Warner Bros has abandoned its attempts to build a œ225 million film studio and leisure park at Hillingdon, near Uxbridge, west London due to planning difficulties. The firm is now considering about 40 sites around London for the scheme.

Bryden joins Tarmac servicemaster

Tarmac ServiceMaster, the Anglo-American management joint venture between Tarmac Professional Services and US firm ServiceMaster, has appointed a new managing director - Gordon Bryden, 39, who has joined from rival FM group Serco. He will be joined by Frank Rodrigues, also from Serco, as director of business development and business development manager Ian Cresswell, who has worked with Unilever, Amec and Norwest Holst.
