Schal has won a £37 million project management and
construction management commission from the Magna Trust to
redevelop the former Templeborough steelworks in Rotherham into a
hi-tech interactive visitor attraction.
Magna will house a leisure and learning centre with a large amount
of interactive components.
The display areas will allow dramatic views over the former steel
production floor. Each gallery will be based on the main components
that go into the steel making process, earth, air, fire and
water.
The new entrance hall will contain the five-storey high Great Hall
which will contain the ticket office, a restaurant, gift shop and
exhibition areas.
The project will include a significant amount of demolition and
alterations to the existing buildings to create the attraction
spaces and new entrance.
Other works include a sculpture plaza, a new access road and
parking for cars and coaches.
The scheme is being part-funded by the Millennium Commission which
has awarded it an £18 million grant.
Work begins on-site at the end of this year and is due for
completion by 2001.
