Legal action halted
Kingston upon Hull City Council has discontinued legal action
against two construction firms that advised it upon an ill-fated
project to build a tunnel under the River Hull.
The tunnel project was originally priced at £8 million with
work commencing in 1991.
One year later the work halted after the tunnel collapsed and in
1993 the council decided to abandon the venture and proceed with
twin lifting bridges over the river.
The legal action against Acer Consultants and Soil Mechnics, who
advised the council, began in 1995 but has now been discontinued.
The final cost of the project was £30 million.
A spokeswoman for the council said:"The whole scheme from the start
through construction and the building of the bridges cost just over
£30 million. This included work on the Link Roads, two
bridges, repairing the tunnel and any abortive works.Funding was
from the Department of Transport through a supplementary grant and
credit approvals."
The council was unable to give further details as to why the case
was dropped, as CJ went to press.
