false advertising complaint upheld

The Advertising Standards Authority have upheld a complaint of false advertising against an Essex-based building and roofing contractor, Andy Seaman and Sons. The firm ran a regional press advertisement which claimed "reduced rates for senior citizens." The complainant, who was charged £600 for re-building a wall, challenged the "reduced rates" claim. The firm was unable to provide any evidence to show they offered a discount to senior citizens.

new technical director appointed at hbg

HBG Construction has appointed Richard Hare-Winton as its director of technical services. Previously engineering manager, Hare-Winton will be responsible for technical services, safety and quality assurance and will report direct to the HBG Construction board.

Amec has launched Amec PharmaChem, an integrated design, engineering and construction service targeting companies in the pharmaceutical sector in Switzerland and nearby areas of Germany. The new business will be based in Basel.

skills scheme membership doubles

Membership of the Construction Skills Certification Scheme has grown to nearly 84,000 operatives, doubling the number of cardholders in a year. The Government Construction Clients Panel has indicated that qualifications like CSCS are among factors taken into account by Government departments when commissioning work.

taywood designs boffins' block

Taywood Engineering has designed and cast a block of high performance concrete which is being used by Oxford University's Department of Physics as part of the HIRDLS satellite instrument, aimed at measuring amounts of gases in the upper atmosphere. The sensitive measuring instruments require a very stable mount and the block will be positioned under a vacuum chamber on pneumatic mounts to isolate it from disturbances.

confined spaces safety package issued

The Construction Industry Training Board has issued a new health and safety training package which tackles the risk of working in confined spaces, such as tanks, drains and excavations. The two-hour computer-based training package is called Safe Work in Confined Spaces.

Glasgow-based George Leslie has won a £5.6m contract for Phase 1 of the Ayr Interceptor Sewer project, which involves running a new sewer along the seafront at Ayr from the harbour area to Alloway in the south.

Jarvis has been awarded a £5m contract for the construction of two five-storey Ibis hotels in London Docklands and West Thurrock.

cancer coast-to-coast by tarmac staff

Twelve teams of Tarmac employees are about to stage a coast-to-coast dash in a bid to raise thousands of pounds for Macmillan Cancer Relief. The challenge is to cover the 700 miles between Minehead in Somerset and Thurso on the northern tip of Scotland without hitch-hiking or spending any money on transport. Each team has been pledged at least £1,000 in sponsorship.
