LU consults over privatisation plans
Exclusive by John Leitch
Six construction organisations have been called in by London
Underground for consultative talks on how its planned £7
billion privatisation and upgrade of the tube network should
proceed, it emerged on Monday.
The select half-dozen come from among 100 companies that expressed
interest in the scheme and include Railtrack, Brown and Root,
Balfour Beatty, Jarvis and Tarmac. The sixth is believed to be a
French company.
A construction source said: "Being involved in the consultative
discussions gives each of the six an advantage as they have a voice
on how the process should be shaped."
LU wants to publish its specification for the partial privatisation
of the tube network by November. A prequalifying round will follow,
which is expected to lead to a shortlist of four consortia.
Consortia would lease the infrastructure and upgrade the assets in
return for up to £500 million per year from Government. (Full
