Obituary: Sir Ralph Freeman
Sir Ralph Freeman, one of the UK's premier bridge engineers and
former senior partner of consulting engineer Freeman Fox and
Partners, has died, aged 87. Sir Ralph will be best known for his
work on the Humber Bridge, which held the world record for the
longest span of 1,410m from 1981 until earlier this year. During
his time with Freeman Fox, the firm built a succession of long-span
viaducts - the Forth Bridge, the first Severn Bridge, as well as
box girder bridges on the M5 and M6.
Crown House wins £40m hospital contract
Tarmac subsidiary Crown House Engineering has won a hospital
contract for building services worth £40 million. The contract
forms part of the new 860-bed £200 million Norfolk and Norwich
Hospital being built by John Laing Construction on a greenfield
site at Norwich.
Kvaerner goes underground with waste
Kvaerner is to build a £20 million underground wastewater
treatment works in partnership with Wessex Water and process
contractor, OTV Birwelco. The new plant is being constructed
alongside an existing headworks and long sea outfall to comply with
the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.
Raynesway to fix bedfordshire roadways
Raynesway Construction Services (RCS), the road maintenance
division of Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £10 million
contract to maintain county roads, by Bedfordshire County Council.
The contract, due to commence on 1 November 1998 gives RCS
responsibility for 2,000 kilometres of road network in
Bedfordshire.
New faces all round by MagHansen
Specialist facade engineer MagHansen has won over £5 million
worth of contracts. These include a £1.2 million project at
Newcastle Airport designed by architect Gibb & Partners and
£1.9 million bespoke glass and aluminium facade designed Ove
Arup Facades for BT.
shepherd starts middlesborough square
Shepherd has started work on Helical Retail's £35 million
development, Captain Cook Square, in the centre of Middlesborough.
The building contract, worth more than £10 million, was won in
a three-way competitive bid.
Railtrack sales city offices for £140m
Railtrack has agreed to sell its interests in five office buildings
in London's Broadgate Centre to British Land Company for £140
million. The deal follows the recent sales of Railtrack's interest
in other City properties.
Shell buys Texaco's UKgas business
Shell Gas Direct has bought Texaco's UK industrial and commercial
gas business for an undisclosed sum. Texaco announced its decision
to sell its UK industrial and commercial gas division in March this
year.
Marshalls posts £20m pre-tax profit
Marshalls, the concrete, stone and clay products group, announced
an interim pre-tax profit of £20 million (£13 million).
Turnover in the six months to 30 June was £130 million
(£120 million). Marshalls' trading margin in its concrete
products division moved up from 11 to 15 per cent.
ARC forms National contracting division
ARC is consolidating its four regional road surfacing businesses
into a national contracting division called ARC Construction
Projects with an annual turnover of £50 million. Based in
Greenhithe, Kent, it will be headed by Martin Stevens, formerly
surfacing director of ARC Southern.
