Industry high profile at Labour conference
This year's Labour Party annual conference, from 27 September to 2
October, is set to be a crucial but challenging one for the
industry.
New procedural rules will deny delegates details of the agenda,
including the timing of Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott's
keynote speech, until the weekend of the conference.
Much of the work will be behind the scenes. For the first time in
many years, the Construction Confederation will take a high
profile, co-hosting a fringe meeting on 29 September (Tuesday) with
BMP and the Construction Industry Council. It will be addressed by
CC chairman Alan Crane, as well as Construction Minister Nick
Raynsford, who will also speak at Ucatt's fringe meeting on
Thursday evening. The Quarry Products Association will have a stand
and will be hosting a reception on Wednesday evening.
Key issues will be cowboy builders, integrated transport
legislation, the proposed minerals tax and the implementation of
Sir John Egan's report on reforming the industry.
