BOXTEXT: may gurney 40 per cent profits increase
Norwich-based civil engineering and construction group May Gurney
turned in a 40 per cent increase in profits at £3 million for
the year ended 31 March 1998. Turnover, at £122 million was 21
per cent up on 1997. Jim Holmes, May Gurney Group's chairman said
that the company had continued to perform strongly in its
traditional activities of road construction, surface dressing,
maintenance and utilities.
jarvis to set up fm arm
Jarvis is expanding by setting up a new facilities management
consultancy. The new consultancy, based at Jarvis's Altrincham
office, is aimed at helping companies who are considering
outsourcing their facilities management.
overseas contracts awards down
Provisional figures from the DETR indicate that in 1997 British
construction companies secured overseas contracts worth £4
billion compared with £4.7 billion won in 1996. Over half of
these contracts were either in North America or the Far East.
materials maker reports profits leap
Cape Calsil, the manufacturer of calcium silicate-based building
and industrial products, reported a 20 per cent leap in pre-tax
profits to £4.8m for the half year to 30 June 1998. Turnover
was down from £118.7 million to £115.4 million during the
same period.
amec wins £5m ayrshire millennium job
Amec has won a £5 million contract to build Scotland's
millennium project - The Big Idea in Ardeer in Ayrshire. More than
250,000 visitors per year are expected to visit the 2,800m2
building which will house an interactive exhibit on invention,
conference facilities, a 150-seat theatre, cafe and gift
shop.
ballast to build thames-side apartments
Ballast Wiltshier has won a £6.4 million contract from
Fairview New Homes to build an eight-storey apartment block with
basement car parking facilities in London's Butler's Wharf. The
project, to be known as Vanilla and Sesame Wharf, is scheduled for
completion in early 2000.
nottingham offices get green light
Up to 3,000 new jobs could be created in Nottingham after William
Davis Properties was granted planning permission to develop a
prestigious office location. Work on the Nottingham Business Park,
which will accommodate between 40 and 80 businesses, within
79,000m2 of low-rise B1 office space, will begin in spring
1999.
hewden in £3m hire acquisition
Hewden Stuart has bought Plant and Tools from a subsidiary of
Phennicus. The net assets acquired were £3 million. The
company hires general plant and tools from five depots in Wales and
six depots in the south east of England.
apprenticeships tackle skills shortages
Southern Electric Contracting (SEC) is helping to tackle skills
shortages of qualified electricians by recruiting 42 new
apprentices - its biggest intake since the company was formed six
years ago. All SEC apprentices will follow a four-year
apprenticeship which consists of formal theoretical study at
college, either day- or block-release, combined with on-site
experience to put theory into practice.
