wimpey announces heir apparent
Housebuilder George Wimpey has appointed John Robinson as a
non-executive board director and given him the role of deputy
chairman. Robinson, 57, is currently chairman of medical concern
Smith and Nephew and joins on the assumption that he will succeed
as chairman when Joe Dwyer, joint group chairman and chief
executive, retires in May 1999. Dennis Brant, currently deputy
chief executive, will become chief executive in January 1999.

Malcolm Mintram has been made a director of Kier Partnership - the
social housing arm of the Kier Group. Ken Speakman has been
promoted to construction director of the the Redrow Homes'
Lancashire division. Kelvin Goodacre has left steel framing
manufacturer Metsec to become managing director of curtain wall
specialist Kawneer. Gordon McDonald has been appointed regional
director of quantity surveyor Silk and Frazier.
MAJOR CONTRACTORS GROUP - TAKE TWO
Scotland has formed its own version of the Major Contractors Group.
An inaugural meeting of the group, the Forum for Major Contractors,
was held last week. The initial plan is that the forum will have
the same aims and ambitions as its English counterpart. All 15
member firms of the MCG have operations in Scotland and the
intention is that the forum will provide a separate platform for
their contracting arms in Scotland.
SHAKE-UP FOR ELECTRICAL TRAINING
Details of a radical revision of the electrical contracting
apprentice training scheme are being unveiled this week at a
conference of the sector's Joint Industry Board. The new training
arrangements are set to come into force next January. The
conference will also hear a frank assessment of the JIB's successes
and failures over the past 30 years from its co-founders, former
union chief Lord Chapple and Noel Bailey, of NG Bailey
NEW ACQUISITION FOR MARSHALLS
Marshalls, the concrete and clay products group, has bought
Stonemarket for £16 million - almost £12 million of this
was goodwill which Marshalls will write-off over 20 years.
Stonemarket, based in Warwickshire, made an operating profit of
£2.9 million last year on sales of £8.6 million.
Powerscreen Bonus paid before collapse
Three former directors of Powerscreen, the troubled Northern
Ireland-based engineer currently being investigated by the Serious
Fraud Office, secured pay rises of up to 43 per cent last year.
Despite Powerscreen's huge debts, chief executive Shay McKeown,
sales and marketing manager Pat Dooey, and finance director Barry
Cosgrove received performance bonuses for 1997 worth a total of
£855,000. Salaries and bonuses for the three were
£736,000, £740,000, and £648,000 respectively.
Powerscreen is taking legal advice about recovering these bonuses
which were based on overstated profits.
Wates to fit out Barclaycall centre
Wates Construction has been awarded a £6.2 million contract to
fit-out a Barclaycall Centre for Barclays Bank in Sunderland. The
9,000m2 scheme involves fitting out two three-storey buildings.
