Training efforts to avoid CO fatalities
by Paul Donovan
A new safety qualification was introduced this week in an attempt
to reduce the number of people being killed each year due to carbon
monoxide poisoning.
According to the Construction Industry Training Board, the gas
kills more than 50 people each year and a further 400 narrowly
escape death.
To prevent these, the CITB in conjunction with the National
Association of Chimney Sweeps and the National Association of
Chimney Lining Engineers has introduced a National Vocational
Qualification.
Carbon monoxide poisoning can occur from the burning of any fossil
fuels if there is insufficient ventilation in a building.
President of CO-Gas Safety (the Carbon Monoxide & Gas Safety
Society) Stephanie Trotter said: "Properly qualified chimney sweeps
and lining engineers are crucial to preventing these terrible
unnecessary deaths, and its a first step to our aim of having
compulsory registration."
