Millennium events plan for construction
Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has asked senior contractors to
draw up proposals to hold a month-long millennium celebration of
the construction industry in the year 2000.
The event would aim to capture the imagination of school children
in particular and would focus attention on the achievements of the
industry.
PR consultant Camargue has been drafted in to advise the Major
Contractors Group on how this might be achieved.
Early ideas are to open up sites across the country to the public,
and to project films and photographs onto the side of buildings to
show how they were constructed.
"It has to be something that captures the imagination. It needs the
support of clients and the DETR [Department of the Environment
Transport and Regions]," said Tarmac chief executive Sir Neville
Simms.
Proposals are expected to be submitted to Prescott within two to
three months.
The request was made during Prescott's recent tour of the Lowry
Centre, arranged by Sir Neville Simms, chairman of the Major
Contractors' Group.
