MARLEY SELLS SUBSIDIARY for £3.6M
Marley has sold its Australian plastics division Improdex Pty for
A$9.6 million (£3.6 million). The proceeds will go to reduce
Marley's borrowings. Improdex was acquired in 1995 as part of a
larger deal involving Pacific Dunlop but did not fit into Marley
core activities.
ON THE MOVE with parkman and shepherd
Consulting engineer Parkman has appointed Richard Archer as
chairman. Archer joins the practice from management consultant
KPMG. Shepherd Building Group has announced that David Webb is to
join the board of directors. Webb is the first non-member of the
Shepherd family to be appointed to the main board.
£45M BONANZA FOR HADEN management
Haden Building Management, the building maintenance and support
services arm of Balfour Beatty, has been awarded two contracts
worth a total of £45 million by the Benefits Agency to provide
office services across the whole of Southern England. The
three-year contract, with a further two-year option, involves the
provision of support services to 195 buildings. Some 1,500 staff
will transfer to Haden under the TUPE regulations. Haden already
provides office support to the Benefits Agency in the West
Country.
zurich INSURANCE scheme FOR ARCHITECTS
Zurich Building Guarantees has launched a scheme whereby
architect's completion certificates can be exchanged for a
structural warranty from the insurance company. Architects can join
the scheme by showing that they have a minimum of three years'
experience in designing houses and in project management.
McCORMACK QUITS AMEY due to 'changes'
Amey has parted company with its finance director George McCormack
who joined from Lovell two years ago. The size of his pay-off
remains secret. McCormack's post goes to David Miller, 36, the
former finance director at General Cable. Amey chief executive
Brian Staples said of McCormack: "He's performed his duties
properly and diligently. He has left due to the changing nature of
the group."
EAST MIDLANDS contract FOR FITZPATRICK
Fitzpatrick has been awarded a £16 million contract by East
Midlands Airport to construct the infrastructure for a new DHL
cargo handling facility, as tipped in CJ 8 July 1998. Work includes
moving one million cubic metres of muck to create the building
footprint, car parking areas and 155,000m2 pavement-quality
concrete for the aircraft parking apron.
NEW SPECIFIER GUIDES launched
Two new specifier guides were launched last week, from the Painting
and Decorating Federation and the Federation of Plastering and
Drywall Contractors. The PDF and FPDC guides list all member
companies in seven regional sections, together with the size of
contract that they undertake. The lists are aimed at architects,
local authorities, commercial and industrial clients and main
contractors.
Tower crane deal nears conclusion
Tower crane drivers are one step closer to a final settlement over
pay and conditions following a meeting last week between union
representatives and employer Hewden Stuart. The deal means that
operators will get a £1 rise to £6 an hour and retain all
past bonus conditions. Previously they had been offered £6 an
hour but they were going to lose substantial bonus benefit rights.
