President of Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), HB Kim has said:
"Hyundai wants to be the world's fifth biggest manufacturer in
construction equipment within ten years."
Judging by the European dealers' rapturous reception, as Mr EY Lee
MD of HHI Europe unveiled no less than 14 new models in Belgium ten
days ago, that target may be too modest. As European sales and
marketing manager Harry de Bruijn announced a dealer support
package, the applause grew even louder.
The 14 new models comprise: four new mini excavators (built by Imef
in Italy except the 5t model built in Korea), three new compact
wheeled loaders (also built in Italy by Palazzani), three new
Dash-3 wheeled loaders plus a tool carrier derivative, a 600kg
capacity skidsteer loader and three new models in the Dash-3 Robex
excavator range. There will also be a new Dash-3 65t excavator late
in 1999.
The new models of mini excavator come in as the R15 at 1,500kg,
R30 at 2,700kg, R40 at 3,750kg and - not strictly a mini in
Hyundai's view - the R55-3 at 5,400kg.
Compact articulated wheeled loaders are the HL700-3 (0.7m3),
HL710-3 (0.8m3) and HL720-3 (1.0m3) and all have hydrostatic
transmissions with spacious cabs.
Three new Dash-3 wheeled loaders, the HL730-3, HL740-3 and HL780-3
come in at respective weights of 9,000kg (1.4-1.8m3), 11,100kg
(1.7-2.3m3) and 29,300kg (4.2-5.5m3) and all feature Cummins diesel
power with soft-shift auto-transmission. An optional HL740-TM3 has
parallel-action lift arms and is intended as a tool-carrier. Cabs
are equipped with all the goodies you've come to expect from
Hyundai, that is, radio/cassette, suspension seat and aircon.
But it is excavators where Hyundai has really scored in the UK and
the new Robex-3 models can only add to the sales score (European
sales across the board are up 37 per cent in 1998 over 1997). The
new models are the 160LC-3 at 16,600kg and the 250LC-3 and 250NLC-3
at around 24,000kg depending on front-end equipment. All feature
Cummins diesel power with engine/pump management by improved CAPO
(Computer Aided Power Optimisation) and four-switchable modes to
suit the task in hand. Bucket linkage pins are sealed to keep dirt
out and grease in to give longer life and easier bucket
changing.
Hyundai's range stands currently at 36 models and Kim says it will
swell to 163 models including 'dozers, rollers, graders and cranes.
When Harry de Bruijn tells you that his target for 1999 is 1,000
units and for year 2000 it's 1,200, somehow he's easy to believe.
