HBG's £40m job

HBG Construction has won a £40 million contract to build a new 12-storey Marks and Spencer store in Fenchurch Street, London.

HBG has been appointed to the pre-construction work as part of a two stage tender contract. Enabling works are scheduled to begin next week, but the project will not be completed before August 2000.

HBG has received the letter of intent for the first stage, and they feel hopeful about the formal appointment for the second stage, which is the main construction work taking place early next year, either February or March.

The main construction phase is estimated to last 80 weeks, taking the 30,368m2 store into the new millennium.

HBG is believed to be currently negotiating the construction details and cost plans with the client.

Building Design Partnership has designed the mixed development building. The store will incorporate office space, with a new superstore occupying the basement and lower levels.

The structural engineers are Ove Arup, the M&E engineers are Oscar Faber Partnerships, and the quantity surveyor is Bruce Shaw Partnership.

Marks and Spencer is currently awaiting detailed planning approval, expected later this week.
