Three consortia have been shortlisted for stage two of the second
Millennium Village competition at Allerton Bywater, near Leeds in
West Yorkshire.
Teams led by housebuilders Barratt/Miller Homes, architect Daniel
Libeskind with developer Crest Homes and builder Robert R. Roberts
and Morgan Sindall Group, and the Bellway Urban Renewal Consortium
have submitted proposals for the mixed use scheme on the 23ha
former colliery site. Stage two involves working up detailed plans
for the project.
The winning consortium will be announced early next year. The first
homes are due to be on site later in 1999.
Around 300 to 500 new homes will be built on the site using
innovative designs that incorporate the latest in environmental
technology, recycled materials and high water and energy
efficiency.
The competition is being run by English Partnerships which is
spearheading the development with a £5.7 million reclamation
programme.
The scheme is designed to promote the use of brownfield land to
provide modern mixed-use communities, based on the example set by
the Greenwich Millennium Village in London.
