WSP Williams is the final 'super agency' to be appointed by the
Highways Agency.
The Basingstoke-based consultant won the contract to oversee
maintenance of motorways and trunk roads in West and South
Yorkshire and on routes to the Humber.
The 24 super Agencies replace 91 smaller agents which previously
undertook maintenance. The agencies were created to promote greater
coordination and more strategic management of routes.
WSP Williams previously supervised the West Yorkshire network (as
Frank Graham Ltd) for 10 years from 1986 until 1996. The company
will manage the repair and improvement of 416km of motorway and
150km of trunk roads for a three-year period from 1 April
1999.
John Bagley, Highways Agency Area Manager, said: "The motorways in
West and South Yorkshire are amongst the busiest in the country and
it is essential that they are kept in a good state of repair. Our
new agents will be carrying out safety inspections daily and will
have staff on 24-hour standby."
