Robertson takes over from Foster as MD of Eve Group

Eve Group has appointed Alan Robertson as md. Chief executive Graham Foster is due to retire at the end of the financial year - Robertson is expected to succeed him.

Latest interim results from Eve, announced last week, show a pre-tax profit of £2 million (£1.5 million) in the six months to 30 September. Eve's two business streams, Trakway and Power, each delivered half the overall profits.

Eve was happy to get rid of its construction business during the period, making a slight loss on the disposal. Allen Group was the buyer and the move has enabled it to establish a base in the South of England.

The investment of £3 million in Trakway Division enabled Eve to build on its market share. Both turnover and margin showed a "healthy improvement" on last year.

Eve's Power Division contains 10 business streams. "Managed on a market sector basis, all businesses in the division are now trading profitably," said Foster.

"Expansion of the mobile telephone market and the provision of digital radio and TV continue to provide opportunities for Eve Cellular and our special projects business," he added. In November, Eve won a £6.3 million contract for the refurbishment of the line from Penn to Rugeley in Staffordshire, work running over a two-year period.

Eve Graham, the M&E business which moved out of the red least year, continued to improve its margins. Eve Claydon, which specialises in utility work, entered further long-term partnering arrangements.

Foster singled out Eastern Electricity as one of the most innovative electricity groups, probably because EE is leading the way in reducing its in-house staff and putting more tasks out to contract. "We are almost an FM player," said Foster, "and our turnover is higher.

Overseas activities account for 5 per cent of turnover. Foster wants to lift this to 20 per cent within three years.

Eve has appointed several new middle managers. "This is to strengthen our business development," said Foster. "We have been a bit weak in this respect in the past. Eve now has more salesmen in Europe."
