Millennium cone for Dublin
Exclusive by Michael Gordon
London Architect Ian Ritchie has designed a £2.7 million
Millennium monument for O'Connell Street in the centre of Dublin.
Ritchie fought off 205 architects from Ireland, Europe, America,
and even Iran, to win the commission.
The 120m rolled-stainless-steel tower will form part of the
£27 million facelift for the surrounding area. It will replace
Nelson's Pillar which was blown up by the IRA in 1966 and stand
three times as tall as its predecessor.
During the day, the surface will reflect light and the surrounding
streetscape. From dusk the lower two thirds of the monument will be
softly lit and the tip of the cone will also be illuminated. The
circular base will be of Kilkenny black marble.
The project team is headed by Ian Ritchie Architects, with Ove Arup
responsible for the engineering, and Davis Langdon and Everest as
quantity surveyors. The anticipated completion date is late
November 1999.
