Oman port done
The first container ship has docked at the £56 million
Tarmac-built Mina Raysut Container Terminal built by Tarmac in the
Sultanate of Oman.
In the contract, Tarmac, in joint venture with Archirodon, has
undertook the main terminal construction and onshore facilities for
the Ministry of Communications of the Sultanate of Oman.
The work began on site in May 1997 with initial activities
involving the production of over a million tonnes of rock for the
construction of dykes and armour protection.
Work has also included the construction of 21 buildings, a large
maintenance facility and a power plant with two standby 1400kW
generators.
The mobilisation of construction equipment for the project, which
is situated 1,000km from the capital, Muscat, represented a
considerable challenge and involved the utilisation of resourses
both from within existing Middle East business units and the
UK.
The first two berths are now operational and will be officially
inaugurated this month. Two further berths are still under
construction and will be completed in mid-1999.
