Industry fatalities drop
by Kathy Watson
Construction fatalities fell almost a fifth in the first six months
of the financial year according to provisional figures from the
Health and Safety Executive.
For the first time manufacturing killed more people, 39 against
construction's 34, although it employs fewer people.
Most of the construction deaths were among directly employed staff,
22 against 26 for the same period last year. Ten self-employed
people were killed, one down on last year's figure. The number of
members of the public killed in construction-related accidents also
fell, from five to two.
An HSE spokesman said they were pleased with construction's
performance but it is too early to say whether this is part of an
on-going trend.
