HSE halts work on old Daily Express site

The Health and Safety Executive has slapped a prohibition notice on
the Kajima/Taylor Woodrow joint venture for failing to observe
safety standards on a £80 million redevelopment of the old
Daily Express site at 120 Fleet Street, London.
The notice was served last Thursday. An HSE spokesman commented: "A
notice was served on Kajima/Taylor Woodrow for failing to observe
proper controls of systems of work to guard against risks of people
falling from a height. As a result, decking and steel erection on
three floors has ceased until proper systems are put in place."
A spokesman for Taylor Woodrow remarked: "We appreciate the
seriousness of the prohibition notice and it is a slap on the wrist
for us. We have dealt with some of the safety issues and are
continuing to deal with the remainder highlighted by the HSE. But
work is continuing on other parts of the site where safety is not a
problem."
Kajima/Taylor Woodrow is constructing a 45,000m2 11-storey building
with two 4,000m2 trading floors for client Fleet Street
Partnership, a subsidiary of Japanese trading corporation Itochu.
