CATDEALER FINNING TO CLOSE WIGAN BRANCH.
UK sole CAT dealer Finning is to close its Wigan branch "by the end
of March 1999." The company blames "the strength of sterling and
reduced worldwide levels of infrastructure investment which has
slowed sales of machines from our Used Equipment Export Division,"
for the decision. The Used Equipment and BCP (Building,
Construction Plant) divisions will be relocated to Finning's HQ at
Cannock. A total of 45 people are involved and Finning is
negotiating "a transfer to alternative employment or a redundancy
package."

BARCLAYS PICKS TWO CONTRACTORS
As predicted in Contract Journal four weeks ago, Barclays Bank is
drastically cutting the number of contractors it employs in favour
of selecting a few prime contractors. Last week the bank announced
that Mowlem subsidiary Aqumen and Johnson Controls would be the
firms handling the facilities management of its major non-branch
sites in the UK. The two firms will be responsible for a property
portfolio of 200,000m2 covering 66 sites. Johnson will cover London
and the South with Aqumen looking after the Midlands and the
North.

PRIVATE FINANCE INITIATIVE IS GOOD FOR YOU
A study for the Major Contractors Group has reinforced an earlier
report by the National Audit Office that private finance initiative
projects deliver value for money. The report, The benefits of PFI,
also said that PFI: delivers new buildings and services which would
not be otherwise available; delivers new buildings and facilities
quickly and efficiently; promotes innovation via private sector
investment and skills; and supports local employment.
