Poundbury saves money on roadbuilding

Engineering consultant Alan Baxter and Associates had an integrated transport proposal that could save many hundreds of thousands of pounds on roadbuilding approved for Poundbury, the urban extension to Dorchester being spearheaded by Prince Charles.

Partner David Taylor explains: "We did a traffic impact assessment and came to the conclusion that with half-a-dozen improvements to the cycling and public transport network plus pedestrianisation, the roads that would normally be necessary in an urban development are not necessary here."

When complete, Poundbury will include 2,000 homes, plus commercial, leisure and retail facilities. The village is famous for the Prince's insistence on traditional materials and standards of architecture.
