Sir Nigel Mobbs, chairman of Slough Estates, has been approached by
regeneration agency English Partnerships with a view to
masterminding the £320 million redevelopment of Wembley
Stadium.
Sir Nigel told CJ: "There is a rumour to that effect but nothing
has been formalised as yet. I am currently in discussions with
English Partnerships, I expect a decision within the next four
weeks."
One of his key tasks will be to ensure that costs do not escalate
out of control. Critics say that if spending is not reined in at
Wembley, the project could become embarrassing for the Government.
There are already fears that a further £80 million is required
just to overcome Wembley's planning and transport problems.
Sir Nigel said: "I would draw together the various parties to
ensure that the new stadium and its surrounding area are built
compatible to a national stadium."
Sir Nigel expressed a keen interest in becoming involved in the
prestigious project. To comply with European procurement rules, it
is also likely that international designers and contractors will
now be asked to tender for the work.
