CITB levy must be stopped

Re: 'Level playing field needed,' Contract Journal, 16 June, p30

Sir,

I read with interest the letter from the Home Counties-based construction company and totally agree with the writer's points about the Construction Industry Training Board's levy. Why should the construction industry be treated any differently to any other industry. I refer to the food industry which was up in arms over the proposed levy of £90.00. Yes, only £90.00 which the Government department proposed was to police their industry.

It is about time the building industry lobbied the Government on the CITB issue, we are in a very competitive marketplace and as the article pointed out we are "first to suffer and the last to recover."

All Governments bang on about training and education, which is the taxpayers responsibility, why should the construction industry be treated any differently? My company has been paying this levy for over 10 years, we have never used the CITB and quite frankly have no intention of using them.

So come on construction industry, we are vital to this country's economy, let's start pressurising the Government to stop this very unfair and harmful levy.
