NEW ORDERS UP

The total volume of new orders received by contractors for construction work in Great Britain in the three months March 1999 to May 1999 was 15 per cent higher compared with the three months December 1998 to February 1999 and three per cent higher compared with the three months March 1998 to May 1998. New orders in the private housing sector in the three months March 1999 to May 1999 were 12 per cent higher compared with the previous three months but were 8 per cent lower than in the corresponding period a year ago.

HBG SET FOR GATESHEAD PROJECT

HBG Construction has been chosen as the preferred contractor for the £25 million Baltic Flour Mill development in Gateshead. Ratification of HBG's appointment is expected shortly with work due to start in September on transforming the listed building into a centre for contemporary art.

ON THE MOVE

Leeds-based refurbishment and fit-out contractor Waterhouse has appointed Paul Thompson as contracts director and Paul Morrish as estimating director. Andy Rockett has been promoted to executive director of Capita Property Services' north-west of England operations. Stourbridge-based contractor MJC Construction has appointed Simon Jones to contracts manager, David Hollick to special works manager, and Tony Shaw to chief estimator. Julien Parrot is named as the new chief executive of the Institute of Building Control.

DAVID MCLEAN GETS STUDENT WORK

David McLean Contractors has won a £13.7 million contract to build a 1,000-plus student complex in Liverpool. The contract, at Atlantic Point, comprises 10 four-storey masonry-built blocks. Construction is due for completion in August 2000 for client Moorfield Group. Architect for the scheme is TACP Design.

CHUNNEL LABOUR CHIEF DIES

Joe McDonagh, a senior industrial relations adviser on the Channel Tunnel site, has died. McDonagh was one of the best-known labour relations officers in construction for more than a quarter of a century and had worked with Wimpey and with Myton on the London Barbican project.

TARMAC AGENCY LOSES APPEAL

Tarmac's wholly owned subsidiary labour agency, NCS, is to appeal against the finding of a Reading Employment Tribunal that three members of union Ucatt were directly employed and could therefore submit claims for unfair dismissal, notice pay, and redundancy pay (see CJ, 30 June). Pending that appeal, a hearing last week of their claims resulted in a "satisfactory" but confidential settlement.

BOVIS GOES TO THE PICTURES

Bovis Europe has been appointed to project manage the £5.8 million shell and core contract for an eight-screen muliplex cinema at the Castle Mall shopping centre in Norwich. Client is Friends Ivory Sime Property Asset Management. Also involved are architect Lambert Scott and Innes, structural and services engineer Ove Arup and quantity surveyor FHA Partnership.
