Poorly educated professionals show need for better courses
By Michael Gordon
A study commissioned by consulting engineer Ove Arup has identified
serious weaknesses in the education of engineers, architects,
designers, and planners.
Conducted by Professor David Gann and Dr Ammon Salter of the
University of Sussex, the report shows the need for an overhaul of
many courses.
The report, entitled: Interdisciplinary Skills for Built
Environment Professionals - A Scoping Study, stemmed from concerns
about the falling numbers of applications for courses in the built
environment, which have fallen by more than 25 per cent.
The report states that failure to modernise the professions will
result in a further decline in quality within the industry,
resulting in an inability to compete in these professions in the
next century.
