HBG Pompey win

HBG Specials Contracts has been awarded a £5.8 million contract to restore and convert the historic Boathouse No.6 at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard to a visitors centre and a study centre.

The work will involve the full restoration of the building, which dates from 1864, including repairs to the east end of the boathouse that was damaged by bombs during the Second World War.

In one part of the boathouse, the first and second floors will be converted to create a high-tech exhibition area that will tell the story of the modern navy through film, virtual reality displays and simulators. At the east end of the building, HBG will install a new 275-seat auditorium.

The building will also house the new Institute of Maritime Studies, which will be managed and operated by the University of Portsmouth. HBG will be working with: project manager PMI; architect MacCormac Jamieson Prichard; structural and services engineer Ove Arup; and quantity surveyor Davis Langdon and Everest. Client is Portsmouth Naval Base Property Trust.
