No clues to industry minister
Confusion reigns within the Department of the Environment,
Transport and the Regions as to who will be the new construction
minister following the Cabinet reshuffle.
Nick Raynsford has been promoted to Minister of State, with
Beverley Hughes as his parliamentary under-secretary. Both
ministers will have construction in their portfolio, but it is yet
to be decided who will acquire the title of construction
minister.
Hughes is on annual leave until the end of August and any further
decisions will be withheld until consultations can be arranged
between herself and Raynsford.
Raynsford, who has been rumoured to be Labour's favoured candidate
for the role of London Mayor, will be Minister of State for
housing, planning and London, while Hughes will be responsible for
local government, planning, construction, regions, regeneration,
and 'green' minister.
Hughes was a member of the Select Committee on Home Affairs from
1997-98 and Parliamentary Private Secretary to local government
minister Hilary Armstrong from 1998.
